UK’s Source Code Control makes India foray; eyes triple-digit growth for open source, cloud biz title banner

At a time when the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated application modernization, moving legacy applications to the cloud and increasing the use of open source software, Source Code Control sees India’s vibrant tech community offering significant upsides for its business

National, 14th June 2021: With its large market for technology and technology-backed services, India is uniquely placed to be a hub for open-source development, says Martin Callinan, founder & chief executive of Source Code Control, a UK-headquartered technology company that has set up its India office recently, and is planning to expand its operations in the country.

The company, with over 40 years of combined software licensing and asset management experience and clients across sectors like pharmaceutical, fintech/finance, automotive, engineering, enterprise resource planning, outsourced software development, health, advertising/media and public sector, has reported triple-digit growth in the UK, the US and Europe markets and expects a similar showing in India, too.

The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated application modernisation, moving legacy applications to the cloud, thereby increasing the use of open source software, says Callinan, adding: “India has a vibrant tech community and is being touted as a centre for open source development. Our services will complement this trend by helping Indian companies become centres of excellence and quality in software development. That would bolster the trust companies globally repose in software solutions developed in India.”

At a time when most developed markets – particularly those like the US which are also major importers of tech services – are stepping up regulation to address cybersecurity concerns, Source Code Control expects significant growth in the near future, both in the open source development practice and Cloud Economics.

“Organisations such as GitHub are investing in open source development in India. Investors, venture capitalists and private equity players are investing big in Indian technology companies. That also increases the need for technical due diligence,” Callinan explains.

Besides, other countries are putting requirements on tech companies to manage their software development. For example, The White House Executive Order on cybersecurity will impact Indian tech companies selling in the US.

The executive order, among other things, states: “Protecting our Nation from malicious cyber actors requires the Federal Government to partner with the private sector.  The private sector must adapt to the continuously changing threat environment, ensure its products are built and operate securely, and partner with the Federal Government to foster a more secure cyberspace.  In the end, the trust we place in our digital infrastructure should be proportional to how trustworthy and transparent that infrastructure is, and to the consequences we will incur, if that trust is misplaced.”

Callinan says this will be an increasing trend. “Our services will help Indian companies come up to speed with increasing regulation everywhere,” he says.

What makes the India market even more attractive for Source Code Control is that open source development and cloud economics remain relatively unpenetrated as a business segment in the country. There are a few systems integrators offering some services, but they mostly offer these as a sub segment of other services.

“There are no pure-play ISO 5230 Open Chain standard service provider in India at present. We are the only Microsoft Cloud Economics provider,” says Callinan.
